March: Wild Flowers

Date: TBD

Time: TBD

Where: Location TBD based on wild flower reports

Organizer: Dave Fredmonsky / email - mrdfred@hotmail.com

Location will depend upon where the best bloom is happening. In the past, prime locations included Kings Canyon, Picacho Peak State Park and Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. Some of these locations are some distance from Tucson so let’s hope we have a good local bloom. If the flowers don’t cooperate we will go to the Tucson Botanical Gardens. Bring your favorite flower lens; a macro would probably be a good choice, as well as a tripod that can get low to the ground. A small flash would help with fill light. A reflector would be a good choice as well. Some people also like to bring a black cloth to use as a back drop. The date will be on one of the weekends, depending on the bloom. If we have an early one due to the recent rains we will go on the first weekend. Transportation will be on your own, with carpooling encouraged.

April: Ruby, Ghost Town of Santa Cruz County

Date: April 17th (tentative)

Time: TBD (early a.m.)

Where: Meeting place TBD

Organizer: Cynthia Shoemaker / email - cshoe@mindspring.com

Cost: $12 admission / donation for gas to drivers (if carpooling)

Ruby, a former mining town (1907-1942) has been largely undisturbed since its demise. On the Register of Historic Places, it is located 50 miles SE of Tucson. Ruby offers great photographic opportunities from amongst the dozen or so buildings still standing, including an old school house, vehicles, a pond, and the vacant doorways and windows of crumbling adobe buildings. The terrain is hilly with unpaved roads and trails. There are no facilities except outhouses so bring lunch and water, sunscreen, and a hat. To get to the town site we will drive south on I-19 to the Ruby Road exit, approximately 8 miles north of Nogales. Next we will travel west on Ruby Road, which will turn to dirt past Pena Blanca Lake. Estimated driving time is 1.5 - 2 hours. In the past two wheel drive on this road has been ok.

This world class institution located at the University of Arizona offers a wealth of resources for those interested in exploring the great American photographers. It was born out of a friendship between former university president John Schaefer and Ansel Adams. At the suggestion of Dr. Schaefer, Adams donated his life’s work to the University. Today, the CCP houses the work of 2,000 photographers, reflecting the diversity found in this art form. Open to the public, its collections can be viewed upon request. We will arrange to view a number of original works produced by some of the most important photographers and try to answer the question, what makes these photographs great?

November: All Souls Procession (Dia de los Muertes)

Date: Saturday Nov. 6th

Time: 5:00 pm

Where: Epic Cafe on 4th Ave.

Cost: Donation

Organizer: Cynthia Shoemaker / email - cshoe@mindspring.com

This event is one of those happenings which make Tucson unique. A local artist, Sue Johnson, wanted to honor her father after he passed away. Drawing on the Mexican traditions of the Days of the Dead, a small group with giant puppets and costumed participants created a procession to honor those who have passed away in the past year (including family members, friends, and pets). Over the years this event has grown to where thousands of Tucsonans, dressed in homemade costumes depicting skeletons, death, and whatever moves them participate in a procession down 4th Avenue with altars, puppets, signs, musical instruments, and floats. At the end a giant paper urn is burned. In addition there are stilt walkers, arcrobatics, live music, and pyrotechnic performers. For those who enjoy photographing people this is a great opportunity.
